China Opens New Bullet Train Line Through Qinling Mountains, Cutting Xi'an-Shiyan Travel Time by Six Hours
Tap a highlighted term for a quick explanation.
China has started running high-speed trains on a brand-new railway line connecting Xi'an in Shaanxi Province with Shiyan in Hubei Province, cutting straight through the Qinling Mountains. The first train, numbered G3966, departed from the newly built Xi'an East Railway Station, officially launching passenger service on this route.
The Qinling Mountains form a natural boundary between northern and southern China and have historically made travel and trade difficult in the region because of their steep, rocky terrain. This geography limited economic activity and connectivity between central and western China for years.
The new line covers 257 kilometres and reduces the journey time between Xi'an and Shiyan by more than six hours compared to older routes. Because it connects with an existing high-speed line between Wuhan and Shiyan, travellers can now go from Xi'an to Wuhan, another major city in Hubei Province, in just 2 hours and 41 minutes.
Building this railway was a massive engineering challenge. Construction began in 2021 and cost around 47.68 billion yuan, roughly US Dollar 7 billion. Because the mountains are so rugged, more than 90 percent of the route had to be built using bridges and tunnels rather than flat, open track. The chief designer of the project described the area as a natural geological museum, highlighting how varied and difficult the terrain was to work with. The line also crosses the Hanjiang River, a major tributary that feeds into the Yangtze River.
The new Xi'an East Railway Station, which anchors this line, is a large hub spanning more than 100,000 square metres. It was built using advanced technology, including intelligent construction systems and satellite-based positioning for precision engineering. The station also has over 30,000 square metres of solar panels installed on its roof, expected to generate more than 7 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity every year for use at the station itself.
This launch fits into China's larger infrastructure strategy. The country has announced plans under its 15th Five-Year Plan, covering 2026 to 2030, to speed up the development of transport networks and build a more integrated national transportation system.
By connecting previously hard-to-reach regions, this railway is expected to boost trade, mobility, and economic activity in central and western China, areas that had long been constrained by the mountainous terrain.
Why it matters
This project shows how China continues to invest heavily in high-speed rail to connect its interior regions, which have historically lagged behind coastal areas in economic development due to difficult terrain. By dramatically cutting travel times and linking cities like Xi'an, Shiyan, and Wuhan, the railway could boost trade, tourism, and regional growth. It also reflects China's broader ambitions, outlined in its upcoming five-year plan, to build world-class infrastructure using cutting-edge engineering and green technology, offering a benchmark that other countries, including India, often reference when planning their own high-speed rail projects.
