Thousands of these missions have scattered kilometres of cable across fields, forests and abandoned villages, tangled in bushes, stretched across open ground, or simply lying where a drone fell.
Birds in the area appear to be picking up these leftover cables along with other loose material to build their nests, without any awareness of what the material once was. Scientists are only beginning to study whether this could pose risks to wildlife, such as birds getting entangled, or whether the durable cable might simply persist in the environment for a long time without breaking down.
This discovery fits into a longer pattern of wars leaving lasting environmental marks, from the damaged landscapes of the First World War to the lingering landmines in places like Cambodia and Bosnia. Each conflict leaves a different kind of environmental legacy depending on the technology used to fight it, and Ukraine's war may be adding fibre-optic debris to that list.
