An airport in Florida has just made history for an unusual reason. Palm Beach International Airport, located near Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, has officially been renamed President Donald J Trump International Airport. This is the first time in US history that an airport has been named after a president while he is still in office.

However, for a transition period, travellers will still use the old PBI code when booking tickets, until mid-August, when the new name will fully appear on tickets, baggage tags and airline booking systems.
This change did not come free. Updating an airport's identity across global aviation databases, signage, and systems reportedly cost around $5.5 million.
The symbolism of the move is significant given Trump's deep personal ties to Palm Beach, where his Mar-a-Lago estate is located. His son, Eric Trump, publicly said no one is more associated with the area than his father. Notably, Eric Trump and his family were aboard the first flight to land at the newly named airport.
This is not an isolated instance. Since returning to the presidency, Trump has had his name attached to several government-linked initiatives and assets, including Navy warships, a special visa programme for wealthy foreign investors, a government drug-information website, and a federal savings scheme created for children. However, not every attempt has succeeded, as courts recently blocked an effort to add his name to the United States Institute of Peace building.
The airport renaming reflects both Trump's personal brand influence and the broader political trend of using naming rights to cement legacy while still in power. It also illustrates how state-level lawmakers can play a role in shaping symbolic recognition tied to national political figures.
