A new wildlife documentary titled Wild Tamil Nadu is getting ready for its digital debut on YouTube. The film has been directed by Kalyan Varma, a well-known wildlife photographer and filmmaker, and is narrated by popular actor Arvind Swamy.
The one-hour film was made over four years and is being described by its makers as a celebration of Tamil Nadu's rich biodiversity. It was produced by the company Sundram Fasteners as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts, working alongside the organisation Nature in Focus, with support from the Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
The documentary takes viewers through the state's varied landscapes, from forests to other natural habitats, showcasing animals that are already famous, such as elephants and leopards, as well as lesser-known creatures like lion-tailed macaques, fireflies and the Madras hedgehog. According to the makers, several of these moments captured on camera have never been filmed before.
Beyond showcasing animals and landscapes, the film also looks at how people and culture in Tamil Nadu have long been connected to the natural world around them. This blend of nature and human history is meant to give viewers a fuller picture of the state's ecological identity.
Adding to the experience is a soundtrack composed by Ricky Kej, a musician who has won the Grammy Award three times. His music is intended to enhance the emotional and atmospheric quality of the visuals.
Arathi Krishna, the Managing Director of Sundram Fasteners, explained that putting the documentary on YouTube was a deliberate choice to make it accessible to a wide audience. The idea is that easy access will help spread awareness about the importance of conserving natural ecosystems.
The documentary will be available in two language versions, English and Tamil, allowing it to reach both a national and a regional audience. While an exact release date has not been specified, the film is described as ready to premiere soon.
Once released, Wild Tamil Nadu is expected to serve not just as entertainment but as a tool to build public interest in protecting wildlife and natural habitats across the state.
Why it matters
Wild Tamil Nadu matters because it brings rarely seen wildlife moments and conservation themes directly to a mass audience through a free, accessible platform. By combining cinematic storytelling with corporate and government backing, the project highlights how businesses and forest departments can collaborate to promote environmental awareness. Releasing it in both English and Tamil also ensures the message reaches a broader and more regionally rooted audience, potentially strengthening public support for protecting Tamil Nadu's ecosystems and species at a time when habitats face increasing pressure.
